Gum Disease Treatment in the Raleigh Area
When gum disease has progressed beyond the stages of simple gingivitis, it is called periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can involve the teeth and gums, or it can also involve the bone and surrounding tissues that support the teeth. In the worst case scenario, the bone in affected areas begins to resorb, resulting in the teeth becoming loose and falling out.
Periodontal therapy treats the infection caused by the bacterial buildup and toxins created by the body’s attempt to stop the disease process. In extreme cases, x-rays may be required to find out if any bone loss has occurred. The extent of the therapy depends upon the severity of the disease. Antibiotics may need to be prescribed to help stop the infection so that the healing process can begin.
Gum Infection Treatment
Dental treatment for gum infection usually consists of cleaning the affected areas thoroughly and applying medication if needed. Sometimes antibiotics are applied directly on the gums; other situations may call for oral antibiotics. Follow-up visits to your dentist will also be scheduled to ensure that healing is progressing as expected.
Scaling and Root Planing
Part of the healing process calls for scaling and root planing. Special dental instruments are used to remove plaque and tartar that have accumulated on the teeth. These instruments can get into deep pockets and clean out the debris that has collected. Once the scaling is completed, the roots are planed to make them smooth. The gums need a smooth surface on which to attach to the teeth again.
Once therapy for periodontitis has started, it is important to keep up with treatments and follow-up appointments. Daily oral hygiene at home is vital for successful treatment of the disease.
