Fluoride Applications

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that provides great benefits for teeth. One of the most effective methods for strengthening tooth enamel and preventing tooth decay is to receive supplemental fluoride applications. Our fluoride applications can be completed in a quick and easy process that only requires a couple of minutes. Many patients choose to receive this form of treatment alongside a complete dental checkup for convenience purposes.

Fluoride helps teeth in two major ways:

• It attaches to tooth enamel, strengthening teeth
• It remineralizes damaged tooth enamel, thus reversing the harmful effects of tooth decay

After a patient has received a fluoride application, they must make sure to not eat or drink anything for at least one hour. This allows their teeth to fully absorb the fluoride.

Patients receive fluoride applications for many reasons, such as:

• Protecting their tooth roots
• Preventing tooth decay
• Poor oral hygiene practices
• Limited exposure to fluoride
• Excessive sugar consumption
• Prior history of tooth decay

Although supplemental fluoride applications are an excellent method for helping teeth remain strong and healthy, this treatment should never serve as a replacement for good oral hygiene. Patients must remember to brush and floss twice every day and to visit our practice at least twice per year for a complete dental checkup.
