April Was National Autism Awareness Month

Cary NC Pediatric DentistryLast month our nation took an entire month to pause and focus on Autism. The efforts are to help raise awareness about the needs and struggles of families all over the United States that have an Autistic friend or family member. Most people who have Autism have symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder.

A person who suffers from Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) takes sensory information and they process it differently. Often times sights, sounds, tastes, touches or smells are heightened. The neurological disorder leads to a lot of stress and discomfort for those who have SPD. Movies might seem louder, more realistic and very scary. Certain textures of clothing may cause a great deal of strain due to the way they feel on the skin. [Read more…]
