Deep grooves and pits on the chewing surface of our molars- the teeth farthest to the back of our mouth- can be difficult to reach and even more difficult to clean. Seventy-five percent of all dental decay begins within these deep grooves. How can you provide more protection for these teeth? Usually between the ages of 6-16 your dentist will recommend the application of dental sealants. These preventative restorations crate a surface that is smooth by filling in these pits and grooves with a plastic coating that seals out bacteria and plaque that causes tooth decay.
The process of applying sealants is relatively simple and requires no drilling or removal of tooth structure. The entire process only takes a few minutes and can be completed by a skilled dental assistant or your dental hygienist. Dental sealants come in different shades such as clear and white and cannot be seen by others when you smile or speak. The ideal time to apply sealants is immediately after the eruption of the permanent teeth. Sealant material is painted onto the tooth then hardened with a special light. You can expect your sealants to last 5-10 years.
Sealants do not replace regular brushing and flossing or the regular use of fluoride for overall good oral health. You will still need to have regular dental checkups however, in the long run, dental sealants can help prevent cavities which in turn help to maintain the strength, quality, and health of your natural teeth.
