Last month our nation took an entire month to pause and focus on Autism. The efforts are to help raise awareness about the needs and struggles of families all over the United States that have an Autistic friend or family member. Most people who have Autism have symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder.
A person who suffers from Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) takes sensory information and they process it differently. Often times sights, sounds, tastes, touches or smells are heightened. The neurological disorder leads to a lot of stress and discomfort for those who have SPD. Movies might seem louder, more realistic and very scary. Certain textures of clothing may cause a great deal of strain due to the way they feel on the skin.
As you can imagine, if you are a dental patient with SPD new smells, textures, visuals and sounds may cause you a great deal of strain. SPD patients will often avoid the dental office due to the strain. In this situation dental health suffers, and it can lead to other, more serious problems.
If you are avoiding the dentist office because you or your family member suffers from SPD, there is a solution for you, sedation dentistry. Nitrous Oxide (“laughing gas”) has been safely used for centuries. There are also oral sedation methods used to help ease dental phobias.
At Axiom Dentistry we try to accomdate all of our patient’s needs. We understand that each person has been made in a unique way and need care that meets each of their needs, even their fears. If you or a family member suffers from dental anxiety for any reason, contact our offices to see the difference sedation dentistry can make.
